New Delhi, December 30:
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the murder of Anjel Chakma, as confirmed by NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo on Monday. The commission has reportedly directed local authorities to submit a detailed report on the investigation and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. Kanoongo emphasised that the NHRC’s intervention underscores the importance of upholding human rights and ensuring swift action in cases of targeted violence.
Officials and legal experts noted that the NHRC’s involvement is expected to intensify scrutiny over the handling of the case and provide greater oversight to the investigative process. The commission’s actions signal a strong commitment to protecting vulnerable communities and addressing crimes that raise concerns about social justice and security. Civil society organisations welcomed the NHRC’s step, highlighting the need for accountability and timely justice in cases involving heinous crimes against marginalized individuals.
