Indian Railways to Renew Nearly 8,000 Km of Tracks to Enhance Safety and Speed

New Delhi, January 19, 2026:
Indian Railways has announced an ambitious plan to renew nearly 7,900 kilometres of railway tracks during the next financial year as part of its safety and infrastructure upgradation programme. Officials said the initiative is aimed at reducing derailment risks, improving track durability and enabling higher operational speeds for passenger and freight trains.

The project forms a crucial part of the Railways’ long-term modernisation roadmap, which also includes signalling upgrades and better maintenance practices. Authorities added that priority will be given to high-density and high-traffic routes to minimise operational disruptions and improve overall service reliability.
