New Delhi, November 7, 2025: The Supreme Court of India has directed authorities across the country to remove stray dogs from public spaces such as hospitals, bus stands, railway stations, and markets, and shift them to designated shelters. The order came after concerns were raised over rising dog-bite incidents and safety issues in crowded areas. The Court emphasized that public safety must be prioritized, while also ensuring the animals are treated humanely during relocation.
The SC instructed state and local bodies to work with animal welfare boards to create proper shelter facilities with adequate food, space, and medical care. It further stressed that sterilization and vaccination drives must continue even after relocation. The ruling has sparked debate nationwide, with some praising the move for public safety, while animal rights activists caution against improper handling and lack of infrastructure to house thousands of stray dogs.
