42 US Lawmakers Urge Secretary Rubio to Impose Visa Bans, Asset Freezes on Pakistani Officials Over Transnational Repression

Washington, D.C. | December 4, 2025 — As many as 42 US lawmakers have written to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging him to impose visa restrictions and asset freezes on Pakistani officials over what they described as escalating cases of “transnational repression.” The lawmakers alleged that Pakistani authorities are targeting political dissidents and critics even beyond the country’s borders.

In the letter, the lawmakers called for strong action under existing US human rights and sanctions laws, warning that continued inaction could embolden further abuses. They stressed that targeting activists, journalists, and political opponents abroad undermines democratic values and international norms. The development is expected to further strain already sensitive US-Pakistan relations, especially on issues of governance and human rights.
