Sydney, December 15:
Australia’s strict gun control laws, introduced after the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, have once again come into focus following the recent attack in Sydney. The 1996 mass shooting, which killed 35 people, led to sweeping national reforms, including a ban on semi-automatic firearms, mandatory licensing and large-scale gun buyback programmes aimed at reducing gun violence.
In the wake of the latest Sydney attack, policymakers and security experts are re-examining existing safety measures to assess whether further steps are required. While Australia’s gun laws are widely credited with preventing mass shootings for decades, officials said the incident underscores the need for continuous review of public safety frameworks to address emerging threats and ensure civilian protection.
