Russian forces on Saturday launched a series of missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, escalating tensions just ahead of a scheduled meeting between former US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attacks targeted strategic locations, causing damage to infrastructure but no immediate reports of mass casualties.
Ukrainian authorities confirmed that air defense systems intercepted several incoming missiles, while emergency teams responded to affected areas to assess damage and ensure civilian safety. President Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, calling them a “blatant attempt to destabilise peace efforts” and reiterating Ukraine’s commitment to defending its sovereignty.
International observers warned that the strikes could impact diplomatic efforts and heighten geopolitical tensions in Eastern Europe. Analysts noted that the timing, just before the Trump-Zelenskyy dialogue, may be aimed at sending a political message amid ongoing discussions on security and aid.
