New York, October 22, 2025 — Reddit has filed a lawsuit in a New York federal court against Perplexity AI and three other entities—Oxylabs UAB, AWMProxy, and SerpApi—accusing them of unlawfully scraping its data to train Perplexity’s AI search engine. The lawsuit alleges that these companies bypassed Reddit’s data protection measures and took content that Perplexity used to enhance its “answer engine.” Reddit highlighted that, while it has licensed its content to companies like Google and OpenAI, it has not authorized Perplexity to use its data, which comes from extensive subreddit communities.
The lawsuit claims that Perplexity continued to increase citations of Reddit content even after receiving a cease-and-desist letter, worsening the dispute. Reddit is seeking monetary damages and a court injunction to stop further use of its data. Perplexity has denied the allegations, emphasizing its commitment to factual and open AI development. SerpApi also denied wrongdoing and plans to contest the claims, while the other two accused companies have not commented.
