Vijayawada, December 22:
Construction of the Vijayawada–Bengaluru Greenfield National Highway is progressing at a rapid pace, with officials stating that work on several stretches has reached advanced stages. The project is considered one of the most significant road infrastructure initiatives connecting Andhra Pradesh with Karnataka.

Once completed, the six-lane access-controlled highway is expected to drastically reduce travel time between the two major cities and enhance connectivity for trade, tourism and logistics. Officials said the highway will also support economic activity in towns and villages along the corridor.

Project authorities noted that land acquisition and environmental clearances have largely been addressed, enabling faster execution. The highway is expected to improve road safety and ease congestion on existing routes, benefiting commuters and transport operators alike.

Visakhapatnam, December 22:
A two-day Panchayats Extension to Scheduled Areas (PESA) Festival began in Visakhapatnam on Monday with the objective of strengthening awareness about tribal self-governance and constitutional rights in Scheduled Areas of Andhra Pradesh. The event was organised with participation from tribal leaders, grassroots representatives, social activists and government officials from multiple districts.

Speaking at the inaugural session, officials emphasised that the PESA Act plays a crucial role in empowering Gram Sabhas and ensuring tribal participation in decision-making related to land, forest resources and local administration. Workshops and panel discussions were held to address implementation gaps, legal challenges and coordination between departments.

The festival also features cultural programmes showcasing tribal art forms, dances and traditions, highlighting the rich heritage of indigenous communities. Organisers said the initiative aims to bridge the gap between policy and practice while reinforcing the importance of inclusive governance in tribal regions.

Guwahati, December 20:
At least eight elephants were killed and five coaches of a passenger train derailed following a tragic accident in Assam on Saturday, officials said. The incident occurred when the train collided with a herd of elephants while passing through a forested stretch along the railway track.

Railway and forest department officials rushed to the spot soon after the accident. Emergency response teams were deployed to assess the damage, restore rail traffic, and carry out rescue and relief operations. No passenger casualties were reported, though the derailment caused disruption to train services in the area.

Authorities said a joint inquiry by the Railways and the Forest Department has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over wildlife safety in railway corridors passing through elephant habitats, with calls for stricter preventive measures and early warning systems.

He said traditional medicine continues to play an important role in healthcare for millions of people worldwide.

Tedros highlighted that integrating traditional medicine with modern healthcare can improve accessibility, affordability, and patient-centered care, particularly in developing countries. He emphasised the importance of scientific research, safety standards, and quality control to ensure effective and responsible use of traditional remedies.

The WHO chief noted that collaboration between governments, healthcare providers, and research institutions is essential to harness the benefits of traditional medicine. He added that a balanced and regulated approach could strengthen health systems while respecting cultural practices and knowledge.
