New Delhi, December 30:
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a fresh compliance reminder to online platforms, social media intermediaries, and digital content publishers, urging them to strictly adhere to India’s IT Rules regarding the circulation of obscene, sexually explicit, and harmful content. The ministry emphasised that platforms must act swiftly to remove such material once flagged and ensure robust grievance redressal mechanisms are in place, failing which strict action may be initiated under existing laws.
Officials stated that the advisory comes amid growing concerns over the unchecked spread of inappropriate content, particularly content accessible to minors. MeitY reiterated that intermediaries are legally obligated to deploy proactive monitoring systems, cooperate with law enforcement agencies, and maintain transparency in content moderation practices. The government underlined that safeguarding user safety and digital dignity remains a priority, and repeated violations could lead to penalties, platform restrictions, or loss of intermediary protections.
