Govt Begins Work On Airport At Southernmost Tip Of India On Great Nicobar Island

New Delhi, December 22:
The Union government has begun work on the development of a greenfield international airport at the southernmost tip of India on Great Nicobar Island, marking a major step towards strengthening strategic infrastructure and connectivity in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The project is part of a broader plan to transform Great Nicobar into a key hub for economic activity, logistics and national security.

Officials said the airport will significantly enhance civilian and military connectivity, reduce travel time to the remote island, and improve access for tourism, trade and emergency services. Given Great Nicobar’s strategic location close to important international shipping lanes, the airport is also expected to play a crucial role in boosting India’s maritime security presence in the Indian Ocean Region.

The government has emphasised that the project will be developed with a focus on sustainability and environmental safeguards. Measures are being planned to minimise ecological impact while ensuring long-term development benefits for local communities. Once completed, the airport is expected to act as a catalyst for overall infrastructure growth in the region, reinforcing India’s strategic and economic footprint at its southernmost frontier.
