New Delhi, November 10, 2025: The iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which underwent a massive ₹961-crore revamp for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, is set to be demolished to make way for a modern, integrated sports city. The Centre has proposed transforming the site into a state-of-the-art sporting hub equipped with international-standard facilities, training academies, commercial spaces, and improved public infrastructure.
The redevelopment plan aims to position Delhi as a global sports destination by offering upgraded arenas, athlete-centric amenities, and enhanced accessibility for major international events. While the proposal has sparked nostalgia among sports enthusiasts who associate the stadium with historic matches and cultural events, officials argue that a modern sports ecosystem is essential to improve India’s performance in global competitions and nurture future talent.
