The term describes a one-sided psychological relationship wherein individuals feel deeply connected to a public figure — such as a celebrity, influencer, or fictional character — despite there being no real mutual interaction.
Lexicographers at Cambridge highlighted that the rise of parasocial connections reflects broader social changes in 2025, driven by digital media, social platforms, and artificial intelligence. These one-way bonds underscore evolving notions of friendship, community, and emotional support in a world where many relationships are formed and maintained entirely over screens.
