China’s Frenzied Naval Shipbuilding Continues Apace

Beijing, January 20:
China’s rapid and large-scale naval shipbuilding programme continues unabated, underscoring Beijing’s sustained push to expand and modernise its maritime forces. Recent assessments by defence analysts indicate that Chinese shipyards are operating at an accelerated pace, producing a wide range of vessels including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and submarines, significantly enhancing the operational reach and capabilities of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

Experts note that the scale and speed of China’s naval construction have few parallels globally, raising strategic concerns among regional and global powers. The continued expansion is seen as part of Beijing’s broader ambition to assert its influence in the Indo-Pacific and beyond, particularly in contested regions such as the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait. Analysts added that China’s growing naval strength is likely to reshape regional security dynamics, prompting neighbouring countries to reassess defence strategies and strengthen maritime cooperation.
