Union Minister Gajendra Shekhawat on Wednesday described the recent controversial slogans raised at public events and educational institutions as “unfortunate, but not new,” highlighting that such incidents have occurred periodically in the country. Speaking to the media, Shekhawat stated that while freedom of expression is a fundamental right, it should not cross the limits of respect for public figures, national leaders, or cultural sentiments. The minister emphasised that repeated occurrences of provocative slogans reflect a growing need for awareness about responsible expression and civic decorum among students and public participants.
Shekhawat further noted that authorities must remain vigilant to prevent such acts from escalating into violence or spreading divisive messages. He urged political and community leaders to promote dialogue and understanding rather than indulging in inflammatory rhetoric. Observers believe the minister’s remarks aim to balance condemnation of inappropriate behaviour with the acknowledgment that occasional lapses in public discourse are a persistent challenge. Experts also stressed the importance of fostering education and civic engagement to ensure that freedom of expression contributes to constructive debate instead of inciting tensions within society.
