New Delhi, January 7:
Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Wednesday strongly condemned what he described as “insensitive” remarks made by Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Atishi regarding Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru known for his supreme sacrifice in defence of religious freedom. Sirsa stated that such comments hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community and called for a formal apology from the LoP. The minister emphasised that historical and religious figures must be treated with respect in public discourse, warning that misrepresentation or casual commentary could inflame public sentiment and create unnecessary tension.
Sirsa’s remarks have sparked a wider debate in Delhi’s political circles, with leaders from multiple parties weighing in on the issue. While he urged Atishi to clarify and retract the statement, community leaders highlighted the importance of promoting awareness about the Guru’s legacy and sacrifices. Analysts noted that the controversy underscores the sensitivity surrounding historical and religious narratives in the capital and reflects the need for responsible communication by public representatives. Sirsa also called for increased efforts to educate citizens about the teachings and contributions of Guru Tegh Bahadur, reinforcing values of tolerance, courage and service to humanity.
