NEW DELHI, Dec 20:
Parliament’s Winter Session witnessed the passage of eight key Bills, even as sharp exchanges and prolonged debates marked proceedings between the Centre and opposition parties. The government pushed through the legislations citing the need for reforms, governance efficiency, and economic growth, while opposition members raised concerns over lack of detailed discussion, federal issues, and procedural fairness. Despite repeated disruptions, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha cleared the Bills after marathon sittings.
The legislations covered a wide range of sectors, including governance, economy, social welfare, and regulatory frameworks. Ministers defended the Bills, stating that they were essential to modernise systems, streamline administration, and strengthen institutional mechanisms. The Centre maintained that adequate debate had taken place and accused the opposition of creating unnecessary disruptions to stall parliamentary business.
Opposition parties, however, criticised the government for what they described as a hurried legislative process, alleging that several Bills were passed without sufficient scrutiny or reference to parliamentary committees. Leaders from multiple parties demanded extended discussions, arguing that some provisions could have long-term implications for states’ rights and democratic processes. They also staged protests inside and outside Parliament to register their dissent.
